Shubman Gill was announced as India's new ODI captain for the three-match series against Australia later this month. He will replace Rohit Sharma, who had led India to the Champions Trophy title in February this year.
The 26-year-old had earlier taken over the Test captaincy following Sharma's retirement from the format. He is also the vice-captain in T20Is under Suryakumar Yadav's leadership.
BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the decision stating: "It was practically impossible to continue with three different captains across formats."
Sharma, who is 38-years-old now, features in the squad as a specialist batter alongside fellow veteran Virat Kohli for the upcoming Australia tour.
Following the announcement, an old social media post from Rohit has gained attention.
The former captain had written on X over 13 years ago, "End of an era (45) and the start of a new one (77)." Interestingly, Sharma sports jersey number 45 while Gill wears 77.
Notably, Sharma had sported jersey number 77 in the 2012 T20 World Cup and this was the reference made in the post.
Along with Gill's appointment as captain, Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain of the ODI squad. Dhruv Jurel has been named as the backup wicketkeeper, while experienced Ravindra Jadeja and jasprit Bumrah have been rested. Varun Chakravarthy, who was India's top wicket taker in the Champions Trophy has also been dropped. Mohammed Shami has also lost his place in the ODI setup, potentially marking the end of his international career in the format.
The three-match ODI series against Australia will be Gill's first assignment as ODI captain, where he will lead a mix of experienced players and new talents.
