Parents from around the world can rejoice - or despair - as the kids' favourite character of Bluey gets ready to hit the big screen. For years, the Emmy and Bafta-winning children’s TV series has kept youngsters entertained.

Now, a feature-length film is set to grace the cinema thanks to Disney and BBC Studios. The Australian cartoon first hit the small screen in 2018, winning copious awards in the years that followed.

However, those hoping for an imminent production will have a long wait for a storyline which will go go potentially bigger and better - and definitely longer. BBC Studios and Walt Disney Studios announced on Thursday that the eagerly anticipated movie is set to hit cinemas on August 6 2027.

And while some parents and guardians will be overjoyed at the news, they have been told to "brace yourselves" by some online users following the announcement.

One Twitter/X user said: "Bluey Movie Coming to Theatres—Parents, Brace Yourselves."

And another was concerned with the long wait, adding: "Two more years for a Bluey movie??"

A third was perplexed at what the storyline might entail, adding: "how the f*** can bluey be made into a movie?" "Don’t ruin Bluey," pleaded a fourth, while another was more hopeful, calling the announcement the "best news I'll hear this week".

The film will be written and directed by Bluey creator Joe Brumm, while it will be produced by Ludo Studio in collaboration with BBC Studios. The CG-animated feature is to be produced by Amber Naismith, who worked on smash hits Happy Feet and The LEGO Movie.

And it will be co-directed by Richard Jeffery, who worked on Bluey between series one and three. Speaking after the announcement of the upcoming movie, creator Joe said: "I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that.

"I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together.

"I’m excited to continue to partner with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and Disney to bring this new Bluey story to the big screen."

Currently, the animated series of the family of dogs is broadcast in over 60 countries. While it is a huge hit on the small screen - with hopes the popularity will follow into theatres - a Bluey-themed attraction was also opened in 2024.

The large-scale space called Bluey's World opened Down Under in Brisbane. It was recently names as one of Time Magazine's 'World's Greatest Places' for 2025.
