Terrorism-related violence is not stopping in the West African country of Burkina Faso. In the latest incident, on Monday, a heavily armed terrorist group attacked a military base in a place called Dargo in the north-central region of the country. About 50 soldiers have died in this attack.
Information about the attack
- This attack took place in Boulsa province, which has become a centre of terrorist activities in recent years.
- Residents and a regional leader confirmed this to the media on Tuesday, though on condition of anonymity.
- According to eyewitnesses, around 100 terrorists were involved in the attack simultaneously. They came on motorcycles and trucks.
What did the terrorists do?
The attackers surrounded the military base from all sides and opened heavy fire. After this attack, which lasted for several hours, the terrorists set the base on fire. Apart from this, they also looted weapons, ammunition and other military material.
Which organisation is under suspicion?
The Islamic terrorist organisation "Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimeen" (JNIM) is suspected to be behind this attack. This organisation is linked to al-Qaeda and is active throughout the Sahel region (which includes Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger).
Government response
The military government of Burkina Faso has not yet officially acknowledged this attack nor has it issued any statement. The army is preparing to retaliate, but details have not been revealed.
