Another Costa Coffee store has closed its doors, joining more than a dozen other branches to have shut in the past year. Locals have shared their disappointment after the Costa shop on Marlborough High Street, Wiltshire, closed last month.
According to local reports, the store has been stripped internally and externally, with all Costa signage removed. No reason has been given for the closure of the well-liked shop on Marlborough High Street. A spokesperson for Costa confirmed the store ceased trading on July 17.
The spokesperson told the Gazette and Herald: "The majority of our talented team members have relocated to Costa Coffee stores in surrounding areas."
One local said the closure was a "terrible loss" for Marlborough, while another added it was "such a shame", describing the store as "a great coffee shop".
Britain's ongoing high street struggles are well-documented. Retailers face competition from online stores, high rent costs, and slow consumer spending.
According to new British Retail Consortium-Sensormatic data, one in seven UK shops lies empty.
It also found that a hoped-for summer boost to retail has failed to materialise for the second consecutive year, with total UK footfall down by 0.4% year on year in July, while shopper visits to the high street fell by 1.7%.
Costa Coffee, the UK's largest coffee brand, was acquired by Coca-Cola for £3.9 billion in 2019. It has more than 2,700 stores across the UK and Ireland and international cafes.
However, sales have reportedly slumped in recent years, leading to the closure of several outlets.
According to The Standard, these are the Costa Coffee shops to have closed since September 2024:
- Shell Highworth Service Station
- Stockton High Street
- Lyndhurst, New Forest
- Bridlington, Yorkshire
- Packhorse Road, Buckinghamshire
- King Street, Maidstone, Kent
- Whitstable High Street, Kent
- Chiswick High Road, London
- Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh
- Rottingdean, Brighton and Cove
- Erdington High Street, Birmingham
- Cheltenham House of Fraser
- Stockton Heath, Warrington
- High Street West, Uppingham
- Fleet Walk, Burnley
- Alexandra Retail Park, Tunstall
- Marlborough High Street, Wiltshire
