If there is one thing that keeps you going throughout the wintertime, it is a good series to binge-watch. Those early evenings are made for it, and so it is a great idea to get ahead and map out the TV you will want to watch, so you don't spend hours mindlessly scrolling through streaming apps.
Country & Town House have compiled a list of the eight new British series still to come through the autumn/winter period, and there is a strong mix of period dramas and crime series waiting to be consumed. Here are the eight most exciting series of the season.
Lazarus (October 22) This one has just dropped on to Amazon Prime so makes a perfect place to start. A Harlan Coben thriller, though usually known to drop on New Year's Day, has landed on our screens early, this time starring a dream duo in Sam Claflin and Bill Nighy, and offering a taste of something different to the Coben we are used to. Working with faithful collaborator Danny Brocklehurst, this six-part thriller is a ghost story, focusing on a tortured forensic psychologist experiencing visitations in the wake of his father's death.
Down Cemetery Road (October 29)Apple TV is home to new detective drama - penned by the same man who brought us Slow Horses, Mick Herron. The writer has published four novels based on private detective Zöe Boehm, and Down Cemetery Road provides the first outing of all. Starring Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson, Down Cemetery Road begins with a house exploding in a quaint Oxford suburb and a girl going missing. Worried neighbour Sarah (Wilson) makes it her mission to find the girl, and enlists the help of Boehm (Thompson) to solve the case.
The Death Of Bunny Munro (November 20)Former Doctor Who Matt Smith is bringing musician Nick Cave's book to the screen in November, in the titular role of The Death of Bunny Munro. But the series opens with a surprising death: this time, Bunny's wife, and the mother of his son. Grieving but trying to remain resillient, Bunny sets out to drown his sorrows on a road trip, but bringing his young son along for the ride.
Trespasses (November)Trespasses will star Lola Petticrew, Tom Cullen and Gillian Anderson, as they tell the story of a forbidden romance between a Catholic teacher and an older protestant barrister in 1970s Belfast. The series is set to launch before the end of the year.
A new drama from the BBC that is penned by BAFTA winner Nicôle Lecky (who also stars in the series), will drop this winter. Wild Cherry follows the life of a teenage daughter who attends an elite private school and she and all of her friends live in an exclusive enclave in the comfortable Home Counties, where there can't be much going wrong. But, as Lorna (Carmen Ejogo) and Juliet (Eve Best) are about find out, the opposite can always be true.
Run Away (January 1)Another from Coben, Run Away, (which is set to drop on New Year's Day) led by James Nesbitt and starring Ruth Jones, is based on his 2019 novel of the same name. This time we follow a father desperate to bring his run-away daughter back home.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms (January 19)All of our wishes have been granted as a new Game of Thrones spin-off is coming our way. This time, focused on the adventures of hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall (aka Dunk; played by Peter Claffey) and his squire Prince Aegon Targaryen (aka Egg; played by Dexter Sol Ansell). Filmed in Belfast with a cast chock-full of Brits, this surely makes the cut as a new British release.
Bridgerton (January 29)The highly anticipated fourth season of Bridgerton prepares to send bohemian son Benedict (Luke Thompson) out on the quest for love, and there is no doubt that he will find it but it is never as straight forward as it seems. The mysterious Lady in Silver (Yerin Ha) could be Benedict's match.
