Guwahati: During the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) council's third anniversary celebration on Tuesday, Jayanta Malla Baruah, the state housing and urban affairs minister, addressed the media regarding the city's waterlogging issues, confirming that measures are being implemented to resolve the situation progressively.

Regarding artificial floods, he said while certain areas still experience flooding during heavy rainfall, the drainage has improved significantly, with water receding within hours. He acknowledged that various initiatives have been undertaken, with relevant departments actively working to resolve this ongoing challenge, though complete resolution would require additional time.

"To completely eradicate the problem, there are plans to transform the Silsako area into a large water reservoir, a project for which the central govt has granted permission and which is set to begin soon. Among future plans, similar to those seen in other state municipalities, there is a possibility of conducting robotic surveys," the minister said.

He elaborated on current initiatives, stating that efforts are underway to adjust drain gradients and increase their capacity where water accumulates. These modifications aim to improve water flow and redirect rainwater from specific city areas.

Regarding the desiltation process, Baruah said, "It is a continuous process because the rain causes the silt to flow back into the drains. We have also warned the contractors involved in the work for not following the instructions properly — which mandate that the silt must be removed within two hours of cleaning. Committees have been formed that are working along with the residents. Strict action will be taken under the District Disaster Management Act for violations."

He said discussions are on with various organisations, including the National Highways Authority of India and Northeast Frontier Railway, to establish coordinated efforts.
