A crew member on Royal Caribbean died as he jumped off the ship on Thursday night, following an incident where he attacked another crew member, according to statements from the Royal Bahamas Police Force .
According to police statements to NBC News, the incident involved a 35-year-old South African male who stabbed a 28-year-old South African female multiple times aboard the Icon of the Seas vessel around 7.30 p.m. The event occurred near San Salvador Island in Bahamian waters .
Police reports indicate that after the assault, the male crew member jumped from the vessel. The ship's medical personnel later confirmed his death.
The female victim sustained injuries to her upper body but remains in stable condition, police confirmed. A representative from Royal Caribbean, quoted by NBC News, described the occurrence as "a personal dispute". The spokesperson said, "One of the crew members was injured, was attended to by the onboard medical team, and she is now in stable condition. Unfortunately, the other crew member is deceased after he went overboard and was recovered in a search and rescue operation."
The cruise line has not released the identities of the involved crew members. Meanwhile, Police officials indicate that a post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the precise cause of death.
