Visakhapatnam: Nadine de Klerk produced yet another stellar performance with the bat to guide South Africa to a thrilling three-wicket victory against a spirited Bangladesh in the Women’s World Cup at the ACA-VDCA Stadium on Monday.
Chasing a tricky 233-run target, South Africa were in trouble at 78/5. But half-centuries from Marizanne Kapp (56; 71b, 4x4, 1x6) and Chloe Tryon (62; 69b, 6x4, 1x6), combined with their 85-run stand, kept the Proteas alive. After their dismissals, de Klerk struck an unbeaten 37 (29b, 4x4, 1x6) to seal South Africa’s third consecutive win, finishing the chase with three balls to spare.
South Africa lost Tanzim Brits for a duck for the second straight match. Captain Laura Wolvaardt (31; 56b, 5x4), dropped on 11 by Rabeya Khan off her own bowling, added 55 runs for the second wicket with Anneka Bosch (28; 35b, 6x4) before she was run out. Bosch, Annerie Dercksen, and Sinalo Jafta failed to make a significant impact, leaving it to Kapp and Tryon to revive the chase. Kapp reached her half-century in 66 deliveries, dispatching a full-toss from Shorna over long-on.
De Klerk rode her luck when Shorna dropped her on the long-off boundary in the penultimate over with nine runs required off eight balls. She then hit Nahima for a boundary and finished the match with a six.
